Looking Back to Arizona |
One of my favorite things about living in the southwest is the wide open skies, crisp blue skies and the clouds - I love the clouds.
Its a subtle change in the landscape between Arizona and New Mexico. They are very similar but there is a change you not only see, but you can feel.
As I travel throughout the state and share images and stories from my journey, you will begin to understand.
After a very long driving day through the mountain I landed in Albuquerque just after dark, the entrance to the hotel in a construction zone and a major wind storm that about knocked me over as I managed to get my luggage out of the truck and into the hotel.
What I have learned from previous travels is to always bring my own coffee. With my french press and a bag of Starbucks, I'll be ready for the days ahead.
Always bring your own coffee |
I've lived in Tucson, Arizona and now in the mountains east of Albuquerque, NM so I must agree with you that the difference in feeling when you leave Arizona and come to New Mexico is definitely palpable. There is such luminous light here, perhaps due to the humidity-free skies, perhaps something else. And the skies are such an intense blue. When I first arrived in Taos, I wrote this poem to express that feeling that artists have about New Mexico:
ReplyDeleteThe blue sky seduced me.
Not like any other sky.
Not the gray-blue of the sky in the city.
Not even sky blue like that of a desert remembered.
But soul-deep blue.
Rising from a field of yellow ochre flowers,
deep green piñon,
and colorado red rock walls.
Pure deep colors against this blue.
Such sweet seduction,
like the fumes of some narcotic smoke,
adrift above the gray-green sage
covering this plain that flows from my feet.
I feel I am standing
on the edge of heaven.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing your poetry Vicki! It is so right on. And I appreciate your participation in the blog. - Karon
